Health care workers are in high demand in most of the english speaking world, I've known a lot of guys who went to nursing school and ended up pretty damn rich because of it.

I would say engineering is a good one because they're well-payed and in demand all over the world. Also, since it's a career that's not resource dependent, you can take it pretty much anywhere. Countries like Switzerland that don't have a lot of natural resources have an economy built on engineers and craftsman adding value to the raw goods that are imported.

It is one of the more difficult undergraduate degrees, but that's what makes it worth it. It's not stagnant, either, there is always demand in the market for engineers. It's one of the few careers that consistently shows steady growth. Also, a master's is usually not needed. Average starting salary for most engineers with a 4-year degree is $50K/year. I fact, many universities don't even offer a masters in engineering and go straight to PhD.

Both of my parents went to a smallish state school for their engineering degrees and make well above six figures, it can certainly be lucrative. But at least in my area new people coming into the workforce face heavy competition even with graduate degrees, fifty thousand isn't a whole lot for the work you're usually doing.

Ouch. Actually I only worked on one just one program where I hired what sum call Mercenary's. That was a very poor choice of word for me to pick up on. They sure could have done that kind of thing and maybe they did LATER on but its not Y eye hired them.
They trained Mujaheddin and Taliban to fight the Russians in Afghanistan. Teliban was once a major friend to USA but not after we left them with promises unfulfilled after Russia bugged OUT.
So eye apologize for picking up on that term. I met many over the years but in only minor ways worked with them and ASAP got the hell off of programs that did such STUFF
