Externally hosted imageThese people are so bad at hiding the clearly unspoken but widely-known quid pro quo arrangement holding up U.S. military aid in exchange for Ukraine digging up dirt on Biden. It's so endearingly hilarious.

I feel sorry for his supporters who now have to justify this. Reasonable, less fanatic people can disagree with people they support, but not these guys. Now they've got to come out and say that it's okay to rig elections using foreign powers, while still saying that (imaginary) voter fraud by immigrants is wrong.

@1,047,054 (C)
Bert, at least, is too stupid to understand this so he sort of gets a pass. It's the moderately more intelligent ones like the NZ troll I worry about. It's surely a drain on their mental health.

Georgia Bulldogs 4-0
Oct 5, 4:00 PM
TV: ESPN @ Tennessee
1-3

Tennessee Volunteers will bend down and take it in the ass, just as all Southern Gentleman do.
Throughout the 1990s, Tennessee went 9–0 vs Georgia, holding a nine-game win streak. Those were the days bert was in and out of prison so he missed much of that.

Georgia continued their streak until 2015 when Tennessee defeated the Bulldogs 38–31 in Knoxville,

In the 2017 meeting, Georgia defeated Tennessee 41–0 in Knoxville, giving Tennessee its worst home loss since 1905

In the latest meeting, Georgia defeated Tennessee 38–12 in Athens at Sanford Stadium.

So as I said bert will have an opportunity to view the Vols as well as Trump, who one day soon will be headed to prison.

I don't see what's so bad about asking for something in exchange for aid. "I'll give you X if you give me Y" - this is how humans giving each other stuff has worked since forever.

I mean everyone keeps saying "quid pro quo" like this, in itself, is a bad thing. Did Trump ask for a bad thing, or the wrong thing in exchange for the money? If so, then that should be the point of the story. That he asked for something in return is not a bad thing.

Ok well in that case the reason quid pro quo is bad is because he was holding up congressionally allocated military aid for a militarily occupied allied country in order to coerce them to investigate his political rival. You can't do that. (You actually can do almost anything so long as there are 34 senators who will not vote to remove you from office, but I mean this in the normative sense.)

Then you would probably start looking really closely at foreign countries booking hotel reservations at Trump hotels that they never actually used, or investigate why Jared Kushner is in charge of U.S. Mideast policy despite having zero experience in life or death political disputes, investigate what exactly Ivanka Trump does on the taxpayer dime, investigate what independent businessman Donald Trump Jr. is doing hanging around the White House while nominally running his father's business without his input, etc. The idea that Trump actually cares about nepotism or corruption is absurd on its face.

Also if you were interested in investigating corruption, you'd probably go about it in a not corrupt way by using the proper channels, not having the president threaten to violate the Constitution in order to bully a country currently militarily occupied by a strategic enemy of the United States.

Sure. But not exclusively the Hunter Biden thing. And not like conjuring up delusional conspiracy theories about Joe Biden ousted the prosecutor to defend his son. Hunter Biden probably doesn't speak Ukranian and probably isn't an expert on energy production. His appointment to the board for $50k/mo was clearly an attempt to buy influence with the Obama WH. But like, if you think that's disqualifying, I cannot imagine how mad you are at the Trump Administration's corruption and nepotism. Right?

I guess a large part of it is I think it's completely wrong to meddle in other countries' affairs. To me the big scandal is that we are funding Ukraine's military. The Hunter Biden thing is like 0.00001% importance compared to that in my worldview. If Ukraine can't exist as a sovereign state without the US propping it up then it needs to be broken up or absorbed into Russia or reorganized or whatever will restore equilibrium in that region. I think the Slavs should work this out amongst themselves. No different than when a company is insolvent and can't continue as a going concern so it goes into chapter 7 or 11. Military aid is the international relations version of TBTF, with the same disastrous results.

> You actually can do almost anything so long as there are 34 senators who will not vote to remove you from office, but I mean this in the normative sense.
I think we're going to have a lot fewer norms left by 2024. Trump isn't going to destroy the system but he's put some cracks in the foundation I think.

> Then you would probably start looking really closely at foreign countries booking hotel reservations at Trump hotels that they never actually used
I did laugh when I read that the Ukrainian guy told Trump he stayed at a Trump hotel. I'm not sure how much money is actually going to Trump with these. If I remember right, for most of them it's like he basically sells his name to hotel owners where but he/The Trump Organization doesn't actually own or even run the hotel in most cases. Maybe they get a royalty on each room booked or something. I do doubt that the amount of money flowing to the Trump family from this is enough to matter.

I don't think he's even asking foreign leaders to do it but more like they do it to play to his vanity. I know if I were a foreign leader I would stay in a Trump hotel and gush about how great it was and how The Art of the Deal changed my life and I run my cabinet meetings just like The Apprentice, etc, etc. I mean it's a cheap and easy way to get on his good side so why not? I think the only reason you didn't see this in previous administrations is that previous presidents didn't have hotels or any commercial thing that foreign leaders could purchase.

Also the sudden switch from Trump getting impeached over Russian collusion to now getting impeached over Ukrainian collusion has a bit of a "we have always been at war with Eastasia" ring to it. I know the two are supposed to be entirely separate but I still find it kind of funny.

Letting powerful countries invade and absorb smaller countries with impunity is bad and I have no problem defending the strong from the weak. A world where that doesn't happen would be significantly worse.

> I think we're going to have a lot fewer norms left by 2024. Trump isn't going to destroy the system but he's put some cracks in the foundation I think.
Agreed, though if Dems are smart, rather than letting the norms erode, they'll codify them into law (mandatory release of tax returns for any presidential candidate, more whistleblower protections, establishing that presidents can be investigated and indicted while in office, etc.) Hopefully they'll also rein in the executive somewhat but that seems less likely imo.

> I did laugh when I read that the Ukrainian guy told Trump he stayed at a Trump hotel. I'm not sure how much money is actually going to Trump with these. That is true for some hotels but he does actually own the Trump hotels in NYC and DC I think. It's not so much that it's a significant source of his income, it's the principle that you can get more favorable deals from America if you cater to the vanity and greed of one man. Any deal the President makes on behalf of the country shouldn't have even the appearance of being taken as a consequence of a foreigner shoveling money into the President or his family's bank account.

> Also the sudden switch from Trump getting impeached over Russian collusion to now getting impeached over Ukrainian collusion has a bit of a "we have always been at war with Eastasia" ring to it. I know the two are supposed to be entirely separate but I still find it kind of funny.
Other than being geographically close to one another, I don't see the similarity. The investigations alleged different wrongdoings and I think voters clearly understand this to be a much more explicit example of wrongdoing than the complicated Russia stuff that was litigated for two years in the press before anything concrete was released.
