Topic: The mad theory and how to beat it

Anonymous A started this discussion 6 years ago #91,990

Everyone with a little interest in the cold war knows about the mad theory. Mad stands for mutually assured destruction. Wasnt there believed to be a flaw in it though? Yes, there was wasn't it? The flaw was that neither side was sure at all that the other side was rational and wanted to avoid harm. The implication was that the heavy cost of nuclear war might not be a deterrent as much as believed. So I'm wondering, perhaps the best way to face your enemies is to give them a knife and let them hold it against your throat, while you beg them to do it.

But that would only work if your enemy is rational, i guess. Otherwise you die.

If you can't assume the other side is a rational actor, then any strategy to influence their behavior is about as useful as making a plan to psych out a slot machine.

Exactly, and that's the point of the suicidal gesture. The message is that i don't even care about anything that this supposedly rational enemy could do. It probably wouldn't feel nice to bleed to death from your throat, but come on, is he really going to do it?
