How does a weed-smoking jobless hippie become a sneering conservative? ?

Could you explain why that is? Thanks.

I don't think you're lumping me into the right political sphere.

The nazi regime used laws to break down the freedoms of their citizens for their own protection. The difference is that our left wing doesn't seem to be too anti-Semitic, more so anti Zionist, thanks.

Sure I am. You're in the sphere where you say you're a libertarian, but you just so happen to agree with and vote for the Republians.

And here I was imagining it was paramilitary squads of brown shirts and Hitler Youth doing the real legwork there, at least until they enough authority to get the military to do it for them like a real totalitarian state. I'm not sure you could call their rise to power lawful, but if you ignore the period from Hitler jumping around with a gun during a failed beer hall coup d'état until... oh the suspension of civil liberties in the wake the Reichstag fire then, sure, it's law and order all the way after that.
I don't see the comparison to US politics though. Both the left and the right pay lip service to the rule of law when it suits them and want to make more laws to "protect" the nation. Whether you think they're going to go overboard protecting us from terrorists in the airports or immigrants at the border or carbon emissions in the atmosphere you can write either side into a doomsday scenario about runaway state authority.
