Topic: Idea: companies should be forced to pay women equally and employ an equal amount of women and men

Meta !Sober//iZs started this discussion 6 years ago #91,762

The way it works is: the per-capita pay of female employees must equal that of male employees in the firm and the number of male and female employees must be equal. So if the average male employee at Acme Corp makes $100,000 a year, the average female at Acme Corp must also make $100,000 a year. The thing is, the company gets to implement this any way it wants, as long as the average works out to be equal. Like you could have all male engineers and it's okay as long as you hire enough highly paid female secretaries to balance the wages out. You could have a thousand female employees at minimum wage and pay one female executive $100,000,000 a year, as long as it balances. Again, the company gets to do whatever as long as the number and total pay of female employees is equal to that of male employees.

I like to imagine that there is an alternate timeline where you work for a prestigious conservative think tank that tries to implement all your ideas.

I was mentally setting it in the late Bush administration years before the housing crisis hit, so pretty close. I was picturing this attempt at a thin, statistical veneer of income equality being tried and turning out to be even more unequal in the long run. This failure would be followed by a lengthy article in Reason magazine about how income equality just can't work. "See guys? We tried it in the silliest way possible and it failed. It's even more unequal! It's a totally unnatural concept. It'll never work."

Men don't get maternity leave!
That's not equal.

Should men get an equivalent benefit?

Some jobs offer "parental leave" that anyone can take. That should be the future of paid leave.

If you consider the amount of effort it takes from a man (9 minutes) vs a woman (9 months) to bring a baby to term it's actually not that unfair ?

As pointed out by Fake Anon, Parental Leave is available to males. However, I get the impression you'd rather see Maternity Leave denied to pregnant women because you're an ass-hole.

A magnificent example of how liberal tolerance for diversity doesnt apply to those with different opinions.

What difference of opinion?

You, a superior mind: "Hey why do women get X but men don't?"

Me, a very stupid libtard: "Actually, men DO get X in many places and it should be the case everywhere"

You, a grandmaster level debater: "So much for the tolerant left! Can't even handle a difference of opinion."

Or:

Conservative: "Hey why do women get cancer but men don't?"

Liberal: "Actually, men DO get cancer."

Conservative: "So much for the tolerant left! Can't even handle a difference of opinion."

If the job requires physical effort or even if it doesn't and the woman can perform a to the same standards as a man, then fine, pay her equally.

To have to pay a woman who cannot meet the job's standards just because she's a woman is wrong.
I have no problem with a woman who can outperform a man in the same job being paid more.

Why do you imagine liberals would insult you? You're pretty much parroting the views of Hillary's 2016 campaign.

Equal work for equal pay @1,043,627 (D) and paid family leave @1,043,199 (D) were both and are still liberal talking points.
