Gasoline was originally a brand name, derived from Cazeline (oil), named after its purveyor, John Cassell.

In the same way, the toilet is sometimes called the "shanks" in the UK, because of the Armitage Shanks brand.

I don't know that being a world power makes much difference. The US felt entitled to start making its own rules about English almost as soon the ink on our hate mail to George III was dry. England didn't care about our linguistic quirks back when we were 3 million weirdos with guns living in the wilderness on the other side of the world. Now we're 300 million weirdos with guns and a worldwide military presence, but they still don't take us seriously.
