It's about a guy who has a cat named Garfield but the thing is, the cat is not named after the cartoon by Jim Davis. The cat is actually named after president James Garfield, who the owner believes he was in a past life. The movie is divided between the cat's owner continuously re-living the 1881 shooting of president Garfield by Charles Guiteau and subsequent slow, agonizing, death by sepsis two months later in nightmares, and by day trying to convince everyone that his cat is NOT named after the Garfield comic by Jim Davis. Eventually the hero reaches closure with both, letting go of his 1881 trauma and accepting that society has forgotten James Garfield and now associates the name only with a tubby tabby.
