Maybe trying to cobble together a bunch of loose cultural ties helps him feel connected to some kind of historical legitimacy in absence of a cohesive cultural narrative. The story of WASPy America really doesn't have much to look back on except some fever dream 1950s nostalgia, and that's not much of a legacy.
