When I think of words, there isn't a voice associated with them. They're there, but they don't really have a sound, and they somehow find a way to interrupt each other anyway.

So what about when you are reading?

I can read something for information and just sort of... scan it without really taking the time to read it out. When I'm reading to get more than just some piece of information out of something (say, a novel) I will slow down and imagine a voice, tone, inflections, accents, and whatever else seems appropriate. Thinking to myself just ends up a mishmash of the two styles (thinking in concepts and thinking in language) depending on what I'm thinking about.

The voice in my head talks to me through conversation, as most people do. More often than not, she creates something of a projection for herself to talk more clearly through. Her voice is soft and soothing, but more often than not, she is harshly critical. She corrects my speech as I say it (causing me to trip over my tongue a lot), and corrects my typing as I write it.

Many many years ago I began purposefully reading and thinking in the voice and accent of a delightful British woman. It was difficut at first, i would often times revert back to my own voice and it took much dilligence and determination to stick with the accent and tone. But now, 12 years later, no one would ever know that a british woman constantly narrates my day and offers me good insight when I need it most.
