His innate brutality was clear in the run up to the 1980 elections. He put on a civilised face for the world for a few years through the 80s and 90s but in the background he was brutally massacring the Matabele. When his power was threatened he reverted openly to his old brutal self. He was not a good guy gone bad, but a bad guy who did a few good things, all of which he then undid when it suited him. You can't celebrate his death because he was 95 and died of natural causes, and it's come 20 years too late to celebrate.
