Topic: It's important to always do a good job, even if it's not rewarded by others.

I saw today a person who was complaining about having to stay ten minutes later at their workplace than their rota specified their hours to be. They argued with great passion that as they were no longer on the clock, they no longer had a responsibility to remain; in other words, that to work without direct payment is to trade your time in return for nothing.

And yet do we not have a responsibility to ourselves to perform those tasks that we choose to perform to the best of our ability? I say that to rush your task, or even worse to abandon your task, is to cheat yourselves of payment. I'm not speaking of mere money doled from your employer, of which the amount you receive is decided by chance or fate, but of the true payment, that flourishing of the divine soul within you that is achieved by living according to the nature of a man of reason.

To put it another way, to leave a task unfinished when you have chosen to perform that task will save you money, which you do not and cannot really own, but it will cost you dearly on the inside, in your heart and mind, which is the only thing that you can truly say is your own.

I know this is copypasta but fuck that, I'm not working for free. No one works because they want to or because it makes them feel good, they work to get paid so they can pay their bills and not be homeless. The only people who actually think this way are the asshole managers/employers who want to take advantage of their employees and make them work for free.

A question: Is it a golden saddle which makes one horse superior to another?

I'm willing to work late and if it's just like a one-off thing I won't try to get 20 mins of overtime or whatever but if it starts becoming routine you better be getting compensated for it.

i don't think ten minutes of grunt work constitutes true payment, that flourishing of the divine soul within you that is achieved by living according to the nature of a man of reason tbh
