People considering buying a phone second hand can check the IMEI to see if it's been reported as stolen.
But who records their imei separately from their phone?

I don’t even know what an IMEI is

US has this too, you can register your IMEI.
If your phone is linked to your gmail, you can report it stolen and brick it through your gmail account.

Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure every country just uses the GSMA IMEI blacklist which operators (or the police) can add to and police/retailers/etc. can query.
Neat that Canada has a service available to the public for free though, it costs £1.99 here with CheckMEND unless you're a retailer. Bloody Canadians.

I keep the packaging for most of my electronics for the period I use them so I would use that to get the IMEI. Now whether a beat up old $50 Virgin Mobile Motorola is worth stealing (or reporting as stolen), that's the real question ???

@previous (Meta !Sober//iZs)
Yeah I'm thinking it's more important for the fools who spend nearly a grand for a phone.

Look up cost of Satellite Phones - Can you imagine what 6G phones are going to cost and maybe NEW Battery Technology just in time for 7G. I have nada to do with batteries.
OP and others here - Once not long ago if you wanted to cancel your account and move on to another company the Provider wood just lock your phone.
Someone will say yes but unlocking is pure lulz - So why do you think the Provider upon call to cancel account due to theft, stopped locking phones for any reason including Theft? So many phones STOLEN need to hire so many higher level people who can access what is needed to Lock the phone UP - They said We cannot afford the staff so lets just put the work on other people out there.
I find MySelf brilliant at Marketing - No one I have worked for accepts my Marketing Brilliance.
Yet I find it amazing - Since it's EASY to Lock a Phone so it can never be unlocked - Microsoft can make it impossible for someone to download Win 10 and they do. They can even do things to Bios remotely you - nuff said - maybe that is illegal?
I say to dumb self - Why NOT totally disable the phone remotely 4Ever - That is so easy and over all people just buy more phones because the Thief no longer gets one for free and SALES Of Phones climb UP.
I don't get it -
What I do get is to say Adiós, Adieu. I am going to Leave my Heart~On in San Francisco -
IF I don't spend all of my spare cash for trip I may have just enough to send well cum on people if I can't have some fun paying my way for my play here - tteh don't and I mean don't count on me doing it - Just that I do have some text to send one day and it - TMI
