The asteroid is set to get closer to the earth than communication and weather satellites in orbit. Most satellites in Earth's orbit are geostationary orbit 36,000 km away (22,236 miles) from the planet.
Apophis is travelling at almost 25,000 mph meaning a slight detour from its trajectory could be catastrophic.

Let's just keep worrying about global warming and how to open the borders tho.

> Express
Ah yes. The same Express that said we'd have the coldest winter on record earlier this year. They love scare MONGERING headlines and RANDOM word capitalisation. It's basically the Daily Mail's special needs cousins.

Will be as bad or worse as when the same asteroid Apophis passed by in 2013? We were fresh off the Mayan end-times doomsday reporting back then. Is there another dubiously interpreted calendar system we can blame in 2029?

So there's an asteroid, big deal! It'll burn up in our atmosphere and be no bigger than a chihuahua's head.

The express predicts doomsday every other week, they exist solely to get clicks. Even still talk about game of thrones azor ahai theories.

"It would have hit with over 30 times the energy of the atomic blast at Hiroshima,"
Wasn't Little Boy only 30kt? The Soviets set off a 50mt Tsar Bomba and it didn't destroy the earth.

there's a shitty clickbait article on 'near misses' every other week these days

@1,030,993 (A) > Do you think 'They' did know but didn't want to cause panic? That is generally protocol isn't it?
Are you retarded? If 'they' didn't want you to know because of protocol, then you wouldn't have any silly doomsday articles to post. Every time an asteroid comes near the planet we get a bunch of clickbait articles, History Channel impact-porn recreations, prepper advertisements, and end-times theology. If the 2012 thing didn't clue you in, there is no "protocol" out there. Plenty of people want to cause a panic because every time another stupid person takes the bait they laugh can about it all way to the bank.
