You remember the whole "racism = power + prejudice" thing where a PoC (say, Farrakhan) can be prejudiced against whites but not racist because he lacks institutional power? I think this might actually not be a gaffe but poverty is being redefined as "lack of money plus no power" meaning a white kid can come from a low income family but a white kid can't be poor because whites have institutional power.
