I've seen people referred to by their last name sometimes. Like you're at work in a meeting and the boss is all like "I swear to god Johnson if you fuck this up ONE MORE TIME..." (where the guy's surname is Johnson).
I also personally know two people who go by their middle name instead of their first name. I don't consider it to be weird at all.

Are the names realistic? I honestly don't know enough about Indian names or culture to have an opinion either way on that. I'll take your word for it though.
