Pavement is generally used for vehicles and in most instances is about 3 meters wide per lane.
Perhaps you are thinking of sidewalks.

There is I think a need to have separate words for the part of the street that cars drive on and the part that pedestrians walk on.
Sidewalk makes sense to because it's on the side of the road where you walk separated from vehicular traffic.
"Pavement" is a poor word for this because it just means the paving surface. Sidewalks are paved but they are different from the street, which is also paved. It's just retarded.
Like I won't argue about "elevator" vs. "lift" because they both make sense in the context of the machine which changes your vertical height inside a building. But I have to disagree on sidewalk vs. pavement.
