That, and because it is theft. Kinda like sneaking into a movie or concert without paying is also theft. Theft of services and theft of intellectual property are still just ordinary theft.

Well then it's just a semantic argument. It doesn't matter what we call it, the fact is that people have a right to protect their intellectual property to some extent and when those rights are violated it doesn't matter whether you call it privacy, theft, or trespassing.

That's why I specifically said "to some extent." Also, you can't copyright or patent "an idea". Abolishing all property rights for the sake of "innovation" would not benefit society at all, and would actually stifle innovation more since people wouldn't be able to take any credit or make any money off of their hard work.

Patents do not stifle competition or innovation. You can only patent a very specific design or process. Patents force competitors to come up with better designs/processes rather than just steal the concepts from others, which forces innovation. If you got rid of all patents, not many people would bother putting time or effort into things like finding new drugs if they can't make any money from their designs.

Patents only force competitors to change minor things and then patent that to protect themselves from not being able to use that slightly-different design/process. > If you got rid of all patents, not many people would bother putting time or effort into things like finding new drugs if they can't make any money from their designs.
That would not only substantially drive down the cost of drugs and put an end to drug shortages (which kill people), but it would encourage the search for drugs that can cure things that actually matter, like AIDS or cancer, rather than having drug companies constantly pump out slightly different ADHD pills.

That doesn't answer my question. It just proves that normal laws of supply and demand don't apply to data. What about the labor they put into developing the games/music/movies/software? Should all that labor be free? If people can't get paid for their efforts, then no one is going to bother making good music/movies/games/software, and then there will be nothing for you to steal. Why are you using the generic "data" instead of something specific, like movie, or music, or software, or media, or service? You're trying to obfuscate intellectual property with the more ethereal concept of 'data.'
Tell you what, how about that 'data' on your HDD is a piece of software, or music, or movie, or media, or service you're wanting to 'use' for a 'reason' and that 'data' was made by someone else who is charging for it's use, then you wanting to 'use' it for a 'reason' is enough of a reason to pay that person for their work.

They only lose a sale if you would have bought it otherwise. You are assuming that if piracy wasn't around the pirates would have spent the money on it instead, which is not true.
Sometimes people pirate as an alternative to paying for it, and end up costing the developer money, but that is not always the case. I have a lot of movies and music that I would not have paid for if piracy was not around, I'd just go without it.

Congratulations on going full retard! A plumber has to do work for each client. If I stopped pirating th artists would have done the same amount of work. Why does this have to be explained to you?
I know it may shock you, but when someone torrents a movie, there is not a refilming as you download. It's been done. The workload will not change whether or not someone pirates the movie. Since I wouldn't have bought it anyway, neither does their $ amount change.
Piracy often has absolutely no effect on an artist. That is what seperates it from theft.

Because stealing is wrong. And you're not going to justify it with your silly little words and arguments. You want to think you're somehow being noble and that piracy isn't 'wrong' probably because it benefits you to be a thief and steal shit that you otherwise wouldn't be able to afford. No, my analogy is still sound. Each person is performing a job and the result of their labors is a product. Money is exchanged for the use of products produced by people who are selling them, unless you are stealing.

You are the one who implied I made those arguments. I have simply stated that 'they wouldn't have bought it anyway' is fail logic. You wouldn't have bought it anyway, but you did use it, so.... you did use it? see how that works? You did use it. You used it, so... You're a stubborn jackass and you haven't learned a thing from this thread. Ideas cannot be copyrighted or patented. Anyone can take your idea and do whatever they want with it, as long as it doesn't violate copyrights/patents, and copyrights and patents only cover very specific works and designs.

There is a difference between an idea and a "software product".

I don't buy much data. If piracy weren't around I might use Pandora more, or rent a movie occasionally. I don't use proprietary software, neither purchased nor pirated so that wouldn't change.

If it weren't for pirates, pandora never would have been able to exist. I don't think people should face criminal charges for pirating unless directly selling pirated software. Note: directly selling. Not linking to or making available on a site where there is ad revenue. I also think any civil action should be very limited. No huge judgements. Less than a few hundred bucks for the most serious cases where no one was selling the material.

Sounds like without piracy he might use Pandora (paid for by ads) or rent movies more... Which means that the artist would recieve revenue.
Also, anon A, you said it's stupid to think pirates would pay for using something if they couldn't pirate it.
Thanks for proving yourself wrong and admitting that without piracy you'd actually pay for some of that stuff you pirate. That was your whole argument against being a theif - that you wouldn't have bought it anyway.
So now you're a theif, and a liar. Nice. At least you admit it eventually.

See, there's always legitimate alternatives to stealing.
Steal if you want to, just own up to it.

I'm not about to waste money just to make you feel good. Even people of the GNU project get paid because corporations want them to develop software for them, so I think those devs will find a way to make a living somehow.. Besides, piracy mostly harms the publisher, rather than the developer.

Not talking about me feeling good. It's about people owning their actions and not making bullshit excuses to justify their behavior.
If you're fine with stealing, cool. Do it faggot. Just don't call it honorable or pretend to be helping anyone other than yourself.

No, I said it's stupid to think a pirate would pay for everything he's ever pirated. > Thanks for proving yourself wrong and admitting that without piracy you'd actually pay for some of that stuff you pirate. That was your whole argument against being a theif - that you wouldn't have bought it anyway.
I did not say I'd pay for everything I'd otherwise pirate, I said I'd rent the occasional movie and use pandora.
If you have to twist my words to make your point you are a failure.

Whether or not piracy is harmful, it's still not stealing.
If I paint an imitation of the Mona Lisa, that is I make a copy, I have not stolen it. Just as piracy is not theft.
Stealing is taking something. Piracy is copying something.
Regardless of how you feel about it, by definition it is not theft.

Actually, up until very recently, piracy referred to the unauthorized usage of intellectual property FOR COMMERCIAL GAIN, rather than just the unauthorized usage of intellectual property.

For people who are against piracy and copyright infringement; why are you posting on this board? It is infringing the copyright of Kimmo Alm! You are using software that was ILLEGALLY STOLEN!!11
