No, I think they were just so desperate to have Nicholas back that they turned a blind eye to the obvious.
Frederic Bourdin was both a liar and a sociopath. Even after he was sent to prison, he called hundreds of people, claiming he had information on their missing children. His only motive was sheer unadulterated malice; he wanted to spread misery and ruin lives. I'd trust his word about as far as I could spit a rat.

I'd say she was desperate to preserve her fantasy, no matter how tenuous it might happen to be. She came off to me as disturbed and broken, but I doubt she had anything to do with the boy's disappearance.

I think the program should have spent more time investigating that incident. The older brother seems like a jerk, and if he was on drugs, he was probably paranoid enough to imagine anything.
It was interesting that he seems to be the only member of the family who saw through Frederic's deception.
