If you went to a voodoo practictioner and asked them to put a deathcurse on somebody you hated, could the court make a reasonable case for attempted murder? I'm talking about a straight vocal incantation, no potions, poisons or whatever.

No, because:
1. It won't happen.
2. It has never happened.
Let's say he happens to die in the same week/month/year/decade as said curse. And he dies from getting hit by a bus, or a heart attack, or a sword-related mishap. He would have died from that, not some weird guy or gal taking money from the gullible and saying bullshit.

If you shoot a gun at someone and miss, it's still attempted murder (depending on where you were aiming, I think).
Why is this different? You are attempting to kill someone.
