Topic: New Zealanders hand over guns to government
Anonymous A started this discussion 6 years ago#88,817
New Zealanders have started handing over their semi-automatic weapons as part of a buyback scheme following a ban after the Christchurch attacks.
Gun reforms were enacted after a gunman shot dead 51 people at two mosques in March.
Saturday's handover in Christchurch was the first of more than 250 collections to be held across the country.
More than NZ$433,600 (£230,000) was paid in compensation to 169 firearms owners, who handed in 224 weapons.
The weapons were then destroyed.
"Police recognise that this is a big change for the law-abiding firearms community and we are hearing really positive feedback from people as they come through today that they are finding the process works well for them," regional police commander Mike Johnson said.

Australia had a similar buyback in the 1990s, yet the country hasn't been taken over by gun-wielding criminals.
Farmers will still be armed with shotguns, and police and military will still have access to automatic firearms and assault weaponry.

Oh Really????
Canada’s rate of gun-related homicides rose last year to the highest since 1992, boosting the overall rate of deadly incidents to almost a decade high.
There were 266 firearm homicides in 2017, an increase of 43 from the prior year, Statistics Canada said Wednesday from Ottawa. The ratio of 0.72 events per 100,000 people climbed 18 percent last year.
The figures come in the same week Toronto police reported the 90th homicide of the year, a record. High-profile shootings in other cities like Ottawa and Vancouver have become a criminal justice issue ahead of a federal election next year, with the Liberal government being pressured by the opposition Conservatives to fight guns and gangs.

Not exactly a hotbed of gun violence, then. Those would be low numbers for some US cities.

Violence is a symptom of hierarchical instability, you can try to make it harder for the violence to occur and that's smart but it ain't smart to think it's going to fix it.

You might want to English 101 and re-read the part where I'm saying Canada's numbers are comparable with US cities. Canada's number of gun homicides is about on par with a single US city like Houston or Baltimore.
