Q: I thought that this app was free to customers upgrading to Windows 10?
The free Windows 10 DVD Player app offer was available for a limited time and has expired. Customers who wish to use this app may now purchase it from the Windows Store. $14.99

I just downloaded VLC, not giving Windows more money for a feature that should have been included for free.

OK I have so many years ago used VLC and for some things it was ok and for a couple of others just so so.
You should be good to go with it.

Oh I should add that just because there is a price on some software for Win 1O, does not mean you cannot get it gratis. Recently I needed something I had credit card out and ready to pay for and was surprised that they sent it to me for free. More than once nor did I pull any strings. Nothing to lose for a phone call and request.

Windows XP was not actually bundled with a DVD player. The technology to decrypt DVDs has to be licensed and that costs money. What usually happened was the PC manufacturer installed the DVD player software as part of the new PC crapware. I think in recent years, with streaming and whatnot, it's reached a point where most people don't care about watching DVDs much anymore and so it's not included. A lot of laptops now (including the last two I bought) don't even have optical drives.
