She just shuts down every attempt at conversation and looks at the TV all sullen-like. Can I ask the nursing home to take away treats until she's nicer?

No she was already in there and needed a new volunteer guardian and I got drunk one night and signed up, which is how a lot of my pro bono work has traditionally happened.
