I can give you the pragmatic political explanation, which is that Obama tried to use tough-on-immigration stance to get Republican votes on legislation, in a sincere but doomed attempt to do bipartisan legislating with people who hated his guts in a way he failed to appreciate. Once that failed Dems saw no reason to kowtow to the Republican base since Republicans would never vote for any substantive legislation he supported even if it was stuff like passing a Heritage Foundation healthcare plan or cutting Medicare that they had previously supported.

I could also point out that politics doesn't happen in a vacuum and that the reason Clinton was so nativist was because America writ large was very anti-immigrant in the 90s, something that sharply changed in the '00s and '10s, see chart. As the country changes, so do the parties. There are no political opinions etched in stone anywhere.

I'm glad Schumer changed his mind and I'm glad Clinton is politically irrelevant because he had awful politics and sexually abused almost as many women as Trump.

Tl;dr black man not so bad, orange man considerably worse.

You can even do your own further research here with some help from a search engine.

When did they call for open borders? They said they think crossing the border should be a civil, not a criminal offense, which is the way it was treated until 1996. Unless you think America had open borders from 1789 until 1996, which is wrong but I won't argue with you.
