I need to get a new laptop soon... could go up to $1600 or $1800 if I needed to, but I'm thinking $1200-1400 ideally.
It needs to be super sturdy (I abuse laptops a lot), able to play Minecraft and SimCity 4 and a few other games. 14-15" screen, don't care if it's heavy, prefer performance to portability, should last 2-3 years while I go back to school. Will play movies and such and normal other shit on it. I will travel with it now and then, so I definitely do need a laptop over a desktop, but I don't think I'll bring it to class daily.
I really liked the Thinkpad I had a few years ago and am considering that again (T410 or T420?). I have an HP Elitebook 6930p I use for work (and pretty much everything else) now, and I've dropped it and spilled a lot on it and it still works, so that's great, but I'm not sure I'd like an HP if i can't get business class.
Thoughts? Clearly I don't know shit about specs or anything else.

If you like gaming, get an MSI laptop. They last long and are really durable, and of course they're great for gaming. They're expensive, but the specs are much better than the Macs (which are much more expensive than MSI laptops).

Stores like Newegg have HP EliteBook laptops. I don't know much at all about workstations though.

Some nice laptops in the lower price range, the HP looks slick, but looks aren't everything.

As I was reading your post, I was thinking "get a thinkpad" then you mentioned liking your old thinkpad.
Definitely get a thinkpad. They last forever and are actually usable unlike most POS laptops that weren't designed by engineers.

I've seen many laptops last for a long damn time, hell I've seen a few still around since the late 90's man. It greatly depends on the manufacturer, luck and how well a person takes care of it. That being said, I don't think I've ever heard anything bad about thinkpads, but really you don't hear/read much about them at all, not sure if that's a bad thing or a good thing, but I'm under the impression that your claims of thinkpads being any better than a decent laptop are unjustified.

They are the best laptops made. Seriously.
A true laptop aficionado would have heard about Thinkpad's legendary indestructible-ness, ergonomics and just plain good design. A Thinkpad is built to last and designed with the user in mind, since the engineers who make them actually use Thinkpads themselves.
You'll never look at a Thinkpad and wonder "What the fuck were they thinking?" as is common with other brands.
