Oh I'll just pay a load of money to a newspaper company so I can publically announce to a bunch of strangers that someone I know is dead.

Useful only if that dead person died with money. Also if they died with jewels then expect grave robbers.
There is a poster here who goes by Necrochick. Obits useful for him to grave rob for well I will leave it up to you to figure what he did with those bodies.
