The nation's federal debt is now projected to balloon to "unprecedented levels" over the next 30 years, if policymakers fail to change laws, potentially pushing the country into the risk of a "fiscal crisis," the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said in a new report Tuesday.
Federal debt is expected to rise from 78% of GDP in 2019 to 92% percent in 2029 and 144% in 2049, the most ever in history, the CBO said.
"That level of debt would be the highest in the nation's history by far, and it would be on track to increase more," said the agency.
Deficits have climbed following two major fiscal stimulus measures under the Trump administration, including a $1.5 trillion tax cut and a massive spending bill. Congress is now negotiating a new deal to replace the budget, which expires on October 1.
"It's bad enough that our annual deficit will soon reach $1 trillion, but CBO's long-term projections show that the deficit will continue growing into the future, with no end in sight," said Michael Peterson, CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. "These clear projections should motivate our lawmakers to begin managing the debt immediately, and budgeting responsibly to help America meet its most pressing challenges."
Federal deficits are expected to rise as spending outpaces taxes collected by the federal government. The deficit as a share of GDP is projected to rise from 4.2% to 4.5% in the next decade. That's significantly more than the 2.9% rate over the last 50 years.
CBO projections assume there will be no changes to the law, and that benefits paid through federal safety programs -- like Social Security and Medicare -- are paid in full.
Debt held by the public has been rapidly rising at a significant clip since 2007. At the time, federal debt stood at 35% of GDP, but deficits arising from the 2007-2009 recession and subsequent policies caused debt to grow sizably in relation to the economy over the next five years. By the end of 2012, debt as a share of GDP had doubled, reaching 70%.

I don't know if they're even pretending. (I don't personally vet all the family trees of everyone I know) I've talked to a lot of people who have great-grandparents who were Russian or Polish Jewish immigrants or who have grandparents who were Jewish immigrants from central or eastern Europe who came over around WWII. Most of these people aren't Jewish and don't identify that way.
Something about this just doesn't add up with my everyday experience. It certainly doesn't seem to be a rule for celebrities or public figures. I can think of more public figures who don't subscribe to that rule - the US President's son-in-law and some of his staff, almost anyone in Hollywood, George Soros, and even the current Israeli Prime Minister for a while in the 80s. It doesn't seem like there is much of a prohibition, or even a norm, against intermarriage.
I'm sure maybe there is a set of people for whom it is a norm, but I don't see that generalizing to a wider population.

There are genetic diseases all over the world in a lot of populations. Tay-Sachs isn't even unique to Jews. Even the Jews it does affect are a subset of the Jewish population. Even when genetic predisposition to certain diseases is present and thought to be caused by a genetic bottleneck due to interbreeding, it isn't necessarily evidence of a cultural pressure toward intermarriage within that group. Things like geographic isolation, population movements, and intercultural factors can lead to small, insular groups. There are populations in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa that have their own genetic diseases without necessarily having any pressure to marry within a group.
I'm sure if you look back far enough into any group you'll see a strong tendency to marry with certain social bounds, whether it's race, nationality, religion, skin color, socioeconomic standing, etc. It wasn't too long ago interracial marriage was a big deal in the US. I guess it still is to some people. I just don't see that kind of behavior widespread or enforced in the current generations, Jewish or otherwise.
