Topic: Why doesn't the North of England have a government?

Anonymous A started this discussion 6 years ago #88,231

Instead they're ruled by the south of England and the UK parliament.

The Scots, the Welsh, the Irish, have all stood tall and cried for their representation, and they've got it.

And what has become of the North in this 21st century. London and the South take the money, the investment and grow fat as Northern towns crumble away.

Now should come the time that the North reclaims its ancient right to self-governance by casting off that ancient crime by the House of Wessex and bringing the Northern Kingdom into the 21st century.

Long live the Northern Kingdom and all its people! Rise up, Northerners, and claim your land for your own!

With a new Northern Kingdom with a government in York, the North should be regenerated and prosperous once again!

You twit, Wessex basically saved Northumbria from the Danes... twice:
Firstly Alfred the Great achieved a decisive victory over Guthrum at the battle of Edington.
Then, 76 years later, after the battle of Stainmore Eadred of Wessex became king because Jórvík (Scandinavian York) had collapsed (with the defeat of Erik Bloodaxe) and its territories were integrated into those of Bamburgh as new earldom of Northumbria... and everybody was perfectly fine with this because nobody wanted another Viking ruler (or possibly half Viking, i.e. Osulf).

Edington is not in the North and was a battle at the borders of Wessex with the Danelaw of East Anglia.

His grandson then claimed the throne by right of conquest, as I said.

We are now a thousand years later and the justification for the occupation of the North to protect it against another Norse king no longer applies.

We are not in danger of being reinvaded by Denmark and no longer require the confiscation of our ancestral right to self-governance.

Also the House of Wessex was itself overthrown by the so-called right of conquest of William the bastard. Illegitimate!

You sir are a fool. The Danes are many things, but trustworthy is not one of those. They are biding their time, rubbing their greasy little hands, just waiting for the English Army to leave North England for a minute. They would strike, pillage, rape all the men and fill the land with pigs.

Never trust a Dane. Ever.

IF UK cannot figure out how to Brexit or NOT - Why not just toss in the Towel and turn it all over to the Queen of England. Your funding her lavish lifestyle - Time to put her back to work.

> Edington is not in the North and was a battle at the borders of Wessex with the Danelaw of East Anglia.
The battle took place there because that's how far Guthrum, the Danish king of the north, had invaded, you quarter-wit.

> His grandson then claimed the throne by right of conquest, as I said.
No, it was by default. Wessex was not that interested in governing the north, which is why Alfred formalized Danelaw.

> We are now a thousand years later...
> We are not in danger of being reinvaded by Denmark...
You were the one who brought up Wessex and their imagined "ancient crime"!

> Also the House of Wessex was itself overthrown by the so-called right of conquest of William the bastard. Illegitimate!
Your point?

> with the Danelaw of East Anglia.
You might be confused by the fact that East Anglia was awarded to Guthrum only after the battle and his & Alfred's treaty. Technically there was no king of Northumbria at that time, only a rabble led by Guthrum, who was basically trying to conquer the whole country.

So your real beef is with William of Normandy, not Wessex. In that case, why fight exclusively for Northumbria? Who is the rightful ruler of the other conquered kingdoms?

You should form a party along the lines of the SNP - Northumbrian National Party?

No, because William the Bastard only claimed the illegitimate throne of England, did not create the title by using force of arms.

And as for that, the answer is the Scots and the Cornish, both of whom were driven out and their lands occupied by Saxons.

Do you think if he had changed his name to William the Rightful Heir he could have not been known as a bastard? His main problem was branding imo.

Wasn't that where the Angles and Saxons came from in the first place? The history of England is just a series of continental invasions. You guys are way overdue. Maybe if the Danes invaded again, then they could sort out this Brexit thing for you guys thing like sane people?

No, the Saxons came from Saxonia, which was on the north coast of Germany. The Angles also came from north Germany (Anglia). The term Anglo-Saxon was adopted to describe the Angles & Saxes who lived on the island as opposed to those who remained on the continent. I believe Alfred first used the term Angelcynn (hence English) to refer to the people of England in general.
