i like it chilled but not freezing cold, the average pub temp here is apparently considered warm by yanks!
varies depending on the type/style of beer ofc

Yep. I'm with you OP. Brews with complex flavors can't be appreciated if they are too cold. Sadly, bartenders in the US that know better are still often forced to serve everything ice fucking cold because they get complaints if they don't.

When I was a little nipper my mother used to mix half a glass of beer half a glass of milk, room temperature before bed at night.

It's bizarre! I've talked to a lot of americans visiting england who enjoy beer, and they all eventually make the comment (or joke) about the fact we like it "warm"
The US has a really rich history of brewing and loads of really good beers, so I just don't get that

I think the default idea of beer in the US is a watery domestic beer served out of an icy cooler at a picnic, BBQ, or sportsball game. Bud or Miller Lite don't have much flavor, so they don't suffer too much from being ice cold. But the popular idea that all beers need to be ice cold sticks in everyone's head over here. Microbreweries and beer snobs have been gaining some traction in recent years though so maybe it'll start to change.

Let me tell you something about refrigeration. The standard refrigerant for European home refrigeration has become butane or propane. Why a flammable substance, you might ask. Well, the quantity is small enough to not be too concerning. The reason concerns the release of the gases: they are much less of a greenhouse gas than what was previously used.

Apparently I commited a faux pas by asking for a glass to drink it from too?
