Meh. "Similar" sounds pretty close to what he is trying to say, but it is still a bit of a stretch to claim that is common usage. If someone says "make a suitable choice" it is generally a reminder to make a choice appropriate to the situation rather than a request that you make sure your choice is a common or popular one.
