Topic: What's a nice way of asking my father if his father died?

I have really old grand parents on my father's side, like 90s old and I know the old man is really not well but haven't seen or spoken to them in close to 20 years. Fyi I hate them.
They have always sent me a birthday and Christmas card with £20 without fail for longer than 20 years but the other day I received a birthday card only signed by my grandmother and without £20. Obviously I don't care about the cash as I own a flat worth over 300k but how should I approach the subject of the possibility that my father's father might be dead.
It's also worth noting that it would be highly unlikely that I would be invited to a funeral.

A nice way? "Father, tell me please, has grandad passed away?"

Yeah but if he hasn't and my dad asks why I have asked as he knows I don't care, I'll have to say "because I didn't get 20 quid for my birthday"

You could instead mention you noticed it wasn't signed by him and not mention the money

Say you had a dream in which he'd died.
