Why can't publishers realise that DRM is the very reason why the PC piracy rate is so disproportionately high? If PC gamers could rent and buy used games like console gamers, then perhaps the rate of piracy wouldn't be so damn high.

but they don't want used sales either
why would they care if someone buys it second hand or pirates it?

Well too bad for them, since there is the second-hand sales clause. Oh, and if the publishers plan on selling games as "licenses" instead of products, then I have no incentive to buy something I can't own. > why would they care if someone buys it second hand or pirates it?
Because it gives them a scapegoat if many people pirate the game.

I doubt that somebody who has turned to piracy will jump at the chance to rent a game when they can get it for free forever. DRMs are shitty, but taking them away isn't going to put a dent in the amount of pirating that goes on (even so, the DRM system should still be toned down/removed because it's arse).
Shamus Young on the escapist had an interesting solution a while back. Developers could code a game so that pirated version won't play right, for example being too buggy to play or taking out an essential quest item from the game. That way more people would be forced to go acquire game legitametly in order to get a 100% working version.

DRM forced PC gamers to either pirate or take a $60 leap of faith without even having the chance to refund or sell it used. Guess which option is chosen most often by PC gamers?

How is that different from DRM?

I'm not defending the DRM, I'm saying that removing it wouldn't lower the rates of piracy too much. Just do you know, I'd like the DRM gone too.
Okay, so you take the DRM out, piracy will still be rife. See, consoles don't have things like torrenting and online distribution. PC games have always been very easy to pirate, and even if you move towards things like rentals, the people who already pirate stiff are still going to take the free option iver paying amy amount of money.

It wouldn't hurt legitimate customers, for one. The DRM is present in all versions of a game, but if you coded it so that pirate versions of the game would fuck up gameplay-wise, only the pirates would be affected.

Perhaps if Steam implemented a used sales and a free-trial rental mode onto the library, then the piracy rate may drop substantially among the "pirate-then-buy" crowd.

True, it would probably win over the less hardcore pirates.
How would used sales work with digital distribution anyway?

Here's my plan:
1. pay a small listing fee (goes to the publishers)
2. set your own price
3. put game onto
4. people can either choose to buy the game new, the lowest-costing used license, contact the seller and give best offer, or buy it from an auction
5. your game is transferred to the buyer's account

so why would anybody buy new?

Someone has to buy it new before it is available on the used market.

That's how it is with console games.

No, because the physical versions are actually used, a digital version is the exact same thing.
