Apparently there are a few versions that continue to be actively pursued by hobbyists and the odd technical worker who feels like they can whip something up quick without fussing with a bunch of shit

Wasn't quick prototyping of user interfaces and stuff one of the selling points of Visual Basic? I know a few people who used it for that kind of stuff.

Way back before most were born here I used Basic on PDP-11 and it was a slow bitch to load Basic. Then Basic on a HP handheld calculator with a magnetic strip that you could load and program and keep programs in a plastic box with calculator - Microsoft updated Basic to Visual Basic and you could run it on Win95-98 era machines up to maybe 2007-09 - It sucked when it came to Calculus and I lost interest in it cause Programing, I just had so little patience with. I will never NEVER EVER Forget how easy it was to get into Do-Loop hell.

Three versions of BASIC that are free for use and are still not abandoned are QB64, FreeBASIC, and Just BASIC. My impression is that Just BASIC is nicest to use, but they all have pros and cons. All three have their own forum where people ask for help, post their work, and so on.
