> Finally. The full and definitive list of dadrock albums will be posted.
Indeed yes! Following extensive questions on here I think I've finally come up with a workable definition of the term:
Dadrock is rock music that isn't necessarily rock music which is enjoyed by dads who aren't necessarily dads and was composed sometime between the birth of Hildegard von Bingen and this morning.
So yes, I do believe I am going to provide the definitive list tomorrow! Stay tuned...

And you'd be wrong. The Beach Boys and The Beatles had a rivalry going on in the mid 60s, and without Pet Sounds there would have been no Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band the following year. McCartney credits Pet Sounds (both the song-writing and the production techniques) with pushing The Beatles to new innovative heights. Pet Sounds ended up being the making of the 'great' Beatles era, whereas it was effectively the end of the Beach Boys.

#25 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis

#24 (What's the Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis.
Yes that whole 90s 'Britpop' thing was largely awful (Cast, The Verve, Ocean Colour Scene), but it did produce some decent stuff too (Oasis, Blur and...er...). This is the best record of the genre, and its b-sides (Acquiesce, The Masterplan, Talk Tonight...) were stronger than every other Britpop band's main albums.

Less cohesive than their other albums, and with some utter dreck on it to be sure (Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da anyone?), but there are something like 15 of the greatest and weirdest psychedelic 'pop' tunes ever written on this behemoth of a double album.

#15 IV by Led Zeppelin
As the band fell apart towards the end of the 70s, John Bonham was the one member who showed signs that he was just getting started on his incredible development (see Bonzo's Montreux) before having his life cut tragically short. This album - their masterpiece - contains possibly his greatest performance.

#14 Dire Straits by Dire Straits
This understated gem of a record arrived just as the punk and heavy metal genres were being created. Dire Straits would go on to be one of the biggest bands of the 80s, with a string of hits that were almost entirely awful (Money For Nothing for example). But this fine, smooth, laid-back exercise in flawless virtuosity from the late 70s makes it one of the great rock debuts.

#13 Security by Peter Gabriel
More properly titled 'Peter Gabriel 4', the record label decided that, having allowed him to not give a title to any of his previous 3 solo albums, enough was enough. So 'Security' it is. And it's a fitting title for this remarkable piece of work that explores the fundamental loneliness at the heart of human experience.

#11 Dusk and Her Embrace by Cradle of Filth
And I'm not even joking. I find the 'black metal' genre to be the silliest style of music ever created, but this album has an energy and an atmosphere about it that I love. And profanity aside, Dani Filth is a very literate lyricist, well-versed in the great poets of ancient Rome, who are my main literary love.

#10 The Seer by Swans
2 hours of eeriness, madness, and pure sonic assault. I tend to think this must be the most gruelling listening experience you can have with a single album. The title track alone, all 32 mind-numbingly repetitive minutes of it, is almost unbearable...yet in a weirdly beautiful way. 'Enjoying' this album isn't the point. It's about the catharsis.

#8 Venus Isle by Eric Johnson
I like to imagine there is a special chamber in the 9th Circle of Hell for people who post Youtube links on forums. But on this occasion, I am praying God will forgive me for going against my own principle. This album is my vote for the greatest guitar album (forget Vai, Satriani, Gilbert et al). And the solo beginning at about 3:36 in this video is the most brilliantly-constructed guitar solo ever written. It's telling that nobody has ever been able to make a remotely accurate cover video of it. That's how unique and next-to-impossble it is. There are techniques going on here, not to mention that astonishing tone and legato playing, that even Vai, Satch and 8-year-old Koreans can't come close to mastering.

#6 The Wall by Pink Floyd
The 2nd greatest thing Canada has done for civilization (the 1st is coming up shortly) was having that drunk moron scale the fencing of the human cattle pen at Pink Floyd's Montreal gig in '77, thus giving Roger Waters the idea of building a wall between the band and the audience he had come to loathe.

#5 Either/Or by Elliott Smith
His best album, and as I suggested in an earlier post, he was taken from us all too soon. It would have been good enough if he'd only been blessed with that fantastic finger-picking style but on top of it he had that divine, fragile voice that seems to contain all the pain of the world. The movie Good Will Hunting wouldn't have been half the film it was without the tunes it borrowed from this album.

#4 Lateralus by Tool
A lot of pretentious nonsense gets written about this band, and in particular this album, because of the whole 'Fibonacci sequence' time signatures and whatnot. I couldn't care less about that stuff. That kind of thing needs to work on a subliminal level if it's to have any relevance. You shouldn't have to read a set of math and musicology coursebooks to fully appreciate an album. Lateralus is simply a masterpiece of emotion married to exceptional playing. Danny Carey is the greatest living drummer in my opinion, and if anyone wants to argue that, I'd first advise them to listen to Ticks & Leeches.

Leftovers from the Wish You Were Here sessions and tour...and the greatest thing they'd ever do. How do you top both Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here? With this album. Gilmour's solo in Dogs is the most beautiful guitar solo I've ever heard.
Essential tracks: Dogs, Pigs, Sheep.

Sometimes, against every instinct you possess, you just have to hand it to Canada. They don't do much of global note but when they do it's exceptional. This double album consists of a mere 4 tracks, but it's 87 minutes long. It's also my pick for the greatest album ever made. A beautiful, scary, ethereal experience. The opening 'song' (all 22 minutes of it) 'Storm' announces itself with one of the all-time great album openings, and it only gets better from there on. I don't know who narrates the start of 'Sleep', but God bless him and I share his desperate sadness for our collective loss of innocence. It's all flawless, and it takes the number 1 spot.

I don't know if I could come up a ranked list on the spot. At least, I couldn't come up with one that had compelling, internally consistent rules for inclusion and placement in the ranking without really giving it some thought. I think I'd probably throw a little more metal and 80s-90s rap and hip hop in the mix than Father Merrin does though. (and, of course, some Katy Perry)
> I'll be more than happy for this thread to become the general 'post your top albums' thread!

Hmmm....
"The lyrical themes of death metal may invoke slasher film-stylized violence,[3] religion (sometimes Satanism), occultism, Lovecraftian horror, nature, mysticism, mythology, philosophy, science fiction, and politics,[4][5] and they may describe extreme acts, including mutilation, dissection, torture, rape, cannibalism, and necrophilia"
Lovely.
But anyway, looking at that Wiki page, I can't say I'm very familiar with many of those bands.

I will answer that question as soon as you either 1) provide a citation to your first claim, or 2) admit that none exists. Sorry but you don't get to have discussions go all your own way, making up accusations and then when asked to back them up, switching the subject. You need to learn to be accurate in the things you say, otherwise what's the point of my wasting time discussing things with you?

You can make whatever "points" you like after you've given a citation to your earlier accusation. Your claim was not about any future commnents I may make, but about past threads. If what you said is true (that this is "one of the few threads" in which I don't 'defend pedos'), then why on earth are you finding it so difficult to cite even one of them?
So, I will give you one more chance to cite just one of these apparently innumerbale threads in which you claim I 'defend pedos'. If you fail again to do so, then it will be an admission on your part that no such citation exists. And then - because seemingly unlike you, I am not a coward - I shall answer your question.

Right, so you've admitted no citation exists for your first claim about my 'defending pedos'. Very well.
Now then, let's move on. You asked: "Do you think the Catholic Church is plagued by pedophiles in positions of power?". The important word there is "plagued", and yes, I absolutely agree with it. As you said, there is a wealth of evidence for it, such as testimonies and convictions.

I'm honestly not trying to 'trick' you here, I just think you've made a typo, and it's kind of an important one if we're to understand each other. I've said I agree that the Catholic Church is plagued by pedophiles in positions of power. Now you're asking me if I agree (presumably with you?) that the Catholic Church hasn't been trying to hide it? Isn't your whole point that you believe the Catholic Church has been trying to cover it up?

> What's your favourite piece and style/period
Favorite period is the Romantic era, and style is the solo piano repertoire. Favorite pieces are too many to mention, but off the top of my head:
Beethoven piano sonatas 3, 8, 14, 15, 17, 21, 23, 29, 30, 31 and 32
Schubert Fantasy in C ('Wanderer')
Liszt Sonata in B Minor
Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano, Symphony for Solo Piano, and the 'Grande' Sonate
Debussy Images (my favorite pieces to play, though I can't play all of them)
And many, many symphonies and concertos (the greatest being Beethoven's 7th and 9th Symphonies, Mahler's 2nd and 8th Symphonies, Bruckner's 8th Symphony, Beethoven's 3rd, 4th and 5th piano concertos, Rachmaninov's 2nd and 3rd piano concertos, Brahms piano concertos 1 and 2, and Busoni's piano concerto in C.

Beethoven.

I revisited Soundtracks For The Blind by Swans tonight. What a harrowing, draining experience that monstrous (2 hours 21 minutes!) album is. To anyone not familiar with it, at least seek out the 16-minute track Helpless Child and listen to it in a place of peace and isolation. Almost insufferably moving. Few bands move me like Swans. I have a signed copy (by Michael Gira) of this album, one of the prides of my collection.

The latest Swans album (Leaving Meaning) is far better than I first thought. Many listens down the line and I've gone from thinking it a bit uninspired to considering it a really beautiful piece of work. The trick is deleting 3 of the tracks (The Hanging Man, Leaving Meaning and Some New Things), thereby bringing the run time down to about an hour. That makes for a much more cohesive experience. Recommended.
