I sometimes like to imagine a mirror universe where the abortion polarity is reversed. The left is trying to ban abortion because it's basically Nazi eugenics and fetuses (fetii?) of color are disproportionately aborted. It's also a cruel Fascist plan to keep the poor down by offering them the choice between raising their children in abject poverty or aborting them. The right is pro-choice because they don't want big government interfering with a family's right to choose whether or not they want to have a family (but that's actually just a dogwhistle for the fact that abortion has prevented tens of millions of black children from being born).

Same could be true of guns. Police and Military are Good True Conservatives, and why would you want to endanger law enforcement by letting every criminal have a gun? It's much better to let the sheriff ensure that only good guys have guns (denying the right to minorities). Left wingers would say the only way to protest police brutality and patriarchy is to give every minority and woman a gun in order to even the playing field and reduce the power imbalances in society.

@previous (Fake anon !ZkUt8arUCU)I could definitely see that. The NRA and second amendment types in general are pretty silent when a cop kills a citizen exercising their right to bear arms. The Black Panthers were doing open carry in the '60s before it was cool.
This photograph from the era is mindblowing. White cop standing in front of two heavily armed black men on the steps of the California capitol calmly reading a piece of paper. His gun isn't even drawn. No one seems too fussed about the situation. If that happened today they would have been shot dead by the cop in .000001 seconds. What changed?
I think a lot of these wedge issues is actually like 90% "you guys like X? well we HATE X!" and only 10% actual disagreement on X.
What got me thinking about this is I read an article a while back about how evangelical Christians weren't always against abortion, as opposed to Catholics who have had a pretty consistent stance against family planning for the past few millenia.
