Because I have listened to him in the past and read his writing and it struck me as dumb, so I stopped.

The way I heard it, he got that name because he used to end his debates by throwing a fistful of sharpies at his opponent.
For a while that made him popular with his audience, but then it got to the point where he was just expected to do it so he did it all the time. There's apparently one notorious video where he literally walks up to a woman, shouts about feminism, and then immediately throws the sharpies. So now everyone thinks he's played out.

Man I remember the first time he did that, he just picked up his sharpie and said "and that's all she wrote" and the entire audience stood up clapping and cheering.

So it is true that USAmericans clap when someone throws a fistful of sharpies at their opponent. Amazing.
