I kept rats as pets for quite a while. They are fucking awesome and super intelligent. The shitty thing is that they get a lot of weird illnesses and a lot of vets won't treat them. I got tired of having pets I had to put down with a BB gun after only a few years.

Use a bedding called Yesterday's News. It's recycled newspaper and is much healthier for your rat. You can find it at any PetSmart or similar store. Also, do look in to a bigger cage if you can.
