Topic: The North deserves a devolved legislature!

Deliver a Northern Parliament now! The people in the street are crying for justice, and to be heard, and Westminster is no longer able to govern. We should now rise, and cast off shackles of the yoke of London, the yoke of William the Bastard, and reassert our own control over our own destiny.

For too long, Northern identity has been ignored, shrugged off. We, the jewel of Great Britain, are treated as if we were the forgotten afterbirth of the south. We have so much, we export so much, and we receive nothing for it. Our population suffers under poverty. More people than ever are relying on food banks, or are struggling to support themselves and their families.

Long live freedom! Long live the North!

A STRONG export economy means that the North is PROFITABLE! The lack of investment and development, and the subsequent poverty of the North is an utmost betrayal of all the Northern peoples by the so-called representative parliament in London. The Scottish people spoke up, and they won their freedom. The people of Wales did the same. Why now must we submit to the talons of London in the matter of how and why we are governed?

A historic and cultural basis for government

The establishment of the current legislature originated when the grandson of King Alfred the Great of Wessex, Eadred, brought the kingdom of Northumbria under his control in the year 954. He proclaimed himself King of the English, and his descendants continue the claim on this basis, down to this very day. Thus, even the very origin of the London Parliament mocks the subject peoples of the North.

They do not speak for us

The politicians in Downing Street are only looking out for their own power over the entire United Kingdom. This is what has allowed them to overinvest in the South and drain the North. The only solution to this is more granularity in how the people of the North govern themselves. A Northern Parliament would allow a revolutionary amount of control over the area of the North. For the first time in a millennium we would be able to unite, speak, and legislate for the prosperity of all the people of the North. From Northumberland to Cheshire all peoples of the North will benefit from the greater amount of political involvement they are entrusted with.

Greater local control means greater quality support for all in the Union

The North of England is not the only nation that the London Parliament has historically neglected. Witness Northern Ireland, whose trade with the island of Great Britain represents only 5% of their overall trade. But the Irish peoples are our cousins. Many of the vibrant communities that make up the tapestry of the North are descended from the Irish. Witness the same for Scotland, and for Wales. The North has wonderful geographic access to all of these. Should not we now, we people who have rejected the Law of Westminster, come together in trade to ensure our mutual prosperity? We already have some road infrastructure, and there is so much scope for growth. Belfast-Liverpool shipping lanes will ensure that we will be able to easily between the islands of Ireland and Great Britain. A renewed focus on intra-UK trade will provide a boost to the overall economy of the UK. No longer would all the nations of the Union suffer for London's greed.

Investment, economy, culture and tourism

With a large number of national parks, historical buildings and cities and areas of outstanding beauty, the North has good potential to increase tourism and engagement figures. Any Northerner reading this knows the simple fact that the North is the most beautiful place in the world. With care and attention, we could be the envy of the world.

Economic powerhouses and strategic port cities include Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Hull. Existing infrastructure provide land and sea crossings with N.Ire, Scotland, Southern England, and the European coast. Together, the North generates in excess of £300bil per annum; the tenth largest economy in Europe. Do not pay attention to the lie that the North cannot stand on its own two feet!

Control over the Northern finances means that Northern Parliament can ensure that Northern money is invested back into the North, instead of lining the pockets of the South.

Stand with the North and demand a devolved Northern Parliament!
