Topic: I don't understand the love parents have for their children

Anonymous A started this discussion 7 years ago #86,960

When someone is grieving over a spouse, parent, or friend, I get it sort of instinctively. When it's a child, it confuses and frustrates me, like, "okay, and...?"

Just thought I'd mention that.

People naturally form empathic attachments.

But why do they form attachments to useless leeches?

people make emotional attachments to beings, especially to beings they are responsible for

yeah idk im not much of a dog person but coming into ownership of doggo made me understand a bit (a lot?) better, and doggos are pretty much permanent toddlers

So what you're saying, is that Fake anon just needs to come into ownership of a baby, and he'll understand?

it's not a good idea! if i came into ownership of a doggo under different (but just as involuntary) circumstances i can't honestly say i would love doggo as much

OP is edgy as fuck. His Twitter account has a Nietzsche quote pinned to the top of it.

You eat poop, bert. Yet your mother still lets you mooch off her social security.

That's true! It's just like, hard to one day wake up and be responsible for a kid, and you're on the hook for a lot longer with a kid.

I mean a kid is 18 years, a dog is 10-15

Kids don't become mostly self sufficient until like 25ish in my experience and are a bigger headache all around than dogs who mostly need food attention and occasionally medical care. Kids need rides to school and playdates arranged and homework checked etc.

Yeah, dog is big commitment for me (walks min 2x a day, needs fed 2x a day, needs love all the time, bites other dogs and people she doesnt like/is worried for me about) compared to cat and that's with someone who will watch her when i cant. A kid...Jesus idk.

I wasn't just referring to me and by "self-sufficient" I meant earning enough to where you don't need your parents to help cover some expenses, especially with internships being so common after college nowadays. Once you're 18 you don't need your parents to do your laundry or cook your food or w/e obviously.
