They all cost upwards of $2500/month for a 2br/1ba. It is very very very likely that she never saw one. They are rare in NYC and were illegal in NYC until 1997. It is very plausible that neither she nor anyone she knew growing up ever saw one.

As far as AOC and the garbage disposal, what it signals to people is that she's basically never been outside NYC. I know that garbage disposals were banned there for a long time and many apartments built before the ban was lifted in '97 (especially the lower class ones AOC would have been living in) have not had disposals installed.
I would bet a substantial sum that Donald Trump has never in his life used or even seen a garbage disposal. The difference is, he wouldn't call attention to it because it would alienate his prole base.
