Here is my theory. I used to talk to Scatman privately, even in French over Skype, before he became a batsh*t crazy, demented stalker. He told me many times that he had started at seminary but had never finished, and that he wanted to return. Father Merrin is obviously not a real priest, but his posts show that he does know a substantial amount about Christian theology. Scatman is the perfect candidate.

My bachelor's education was in Latin and Classical Civilisation, specialising later in the great poets of the golden age of Latin (Catullus, Propertius, et al). From there I entered the seminary.
