Carvedilol 6.25mg twice a day. Prescribed because despite losing 10lbs (down to 275!) my blood pressure is still worryingly high. I just swallowed it. A bit nervous. What should I be expecting?
Current BP is 150/101. I'll give you guys regular updates.

Why not take a beta blocker?

Be sure you monitor you BP, a sudden drop could result in fainting.

If you had done, like, two seconds of Googling you would find it is, in fact, a beta blocker.
@991,707 (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC)
I hope so. I've missed a lot of sleep lately and I need to catch up.
@991,709 (D)
I have my own blood pressure monitor (Omron BP760, purchased 2011) so I can check it whenever I want. The doctor said this is a tiny dose so hopefully I won't run into that. I've never fainted in my life.

Apart from you being obese. Is there any other cause of this high blood pressure? I wouldn't worry about that BPM not unless you are out of breath & have chest pain with it.
When I'm highly anxious mine goes up to 150 easy. When I'm on the drink my pulse is always 100-120ish even at resting. Mines at 60 right now.. Now I'm off the drink I can see the health benefits.

Medicine takes time, you may need to let them build up in your system. IDK, tho. I know a lot about several drug classes, but very little about BP medication.

It says they may take up to 2 hours to kick in. I'll know it's working if I get below 130/85 which is the lowest I have seen.

I'm a little cautious about saying this but 2 years ago I nearly died. My appendix ruptured and I was in a terrible way with pain etc, at first I thought it was food poisoning, I left it.. Until it got worse & I called an ambulance the next day, they were useless and told me I just had a 'belly ache' and had a go at me for calling an ambulance.. I told them I'm in pain, I even asked if it could be my appendix.. They said no, that I would be looking like I was in more pain if it was.. So they left and I waited it out.
That night the pain got worse and worse and I was very thirsty all the time and had a hard time walking.. I felt faint. I ended up holding my side rolling around in bed in agony, I told myself fuck this, this isn't a belly ache.. Called an ambulance and got rushed to hospital.. I got told I was very poorly but they didn't know what was wrong at first. They thought I may have an infection.
I drank so much water but didn't piss for 2 days I must have been so dehydrated. I was put on various IV drips and hooked up to a morphine IV machine.
Done tests and came back my appendix had burst and I had bad sepsis. I couldn't breathe properly.. My eyes were going yellow. I couldn't walk at all. My heart rate was 200bpm for 3 days straight, my body was shutting down. I overheard a nurse tell another doctor she was worried I'd have a stroke or heart attack.
I was operated on and now have a huge scar right down my abdomen. I was told I was the worst case they had performed surgery on, I had major blood poisoning.
When I woke up I had tubes everywhere in me.. Bags and tubes it scared me a lot. But I got better slowly.
I was told I was very poorly from the start & I acknowledged that I wasn't in control of my fate. I was at peace though. My dad died in that very same hospital a few years before.
So yes I believe in God. I believe I'd been given another chance at life. The appendix thing happened randomly and made me view life differently. Because next time I'm on my death bed I want to be at peace with myself knowing I've been a good person. That day could be anyday or night. So I choose to be the best person I can be now because there may not be a tomorrow.

Wouldn't it be easier for God to just heal your appendix directly? To me it seems more like the surgeons and doctors and ambulance and modern medicine and the hospital and all those tubes and medicines gave you a second chance ?

I use snus.. But I'm about to quit that at some point as well.
Beta blockers work within 20mins to an hour usually and last 4 to 6 hours. They are relatively safe apart from bad asthmatics, the medication makes inhalers not as effective. Before I got prescribed propranolol another beta blocker I had to have an ECG test. I'm sure you have had one. I only take this medication when needed. It helps with anxiety symptoms like sweating, shaking etc.. The only negative side effect is if taken at higher doses it effects breathing, I start to wheeze a little.

I find that hard to believe considering the medicine doesn't actually, like, you know, do anything.

Absolutely not.. If I never had the burst appendix I would never have had the thought process I hold today, I would have learned and gained nothing.
It's just too worldly and obvious to suggest 'if god exists, why does he allow kids to die of cancer etc' and other examples.
Faith my friend.. I believe there is a reason for everything, God has a plan. If God allows bad things to happen it's because it's a part of his plan and I am greatful for all the bad things in the world because I trust God that he knows best and I would never judge his decisions.. Ever.

Okay this is interesting: 146/101, pulse 91. It seems I'm starting to come down a bit.
I can't tell if it's because I'm less nervous about the meds, the meds are starting to take effect, or both.
I kinda want to take another one just to see what it actually feels like to have 120/80 and like 60bpm pulse. But I'm worried it's like one of those delayed onset things and I'll end fainting passed out on the floor with like a BP of 100/50 or some shit. Better start off small.

I've taken Propranolol™ before, to treat high BP caused by (prescribed) stimulants. Works pretty well! Just be aware of other medications to avoid. FFS read the contraindications bit of the pamphlet in the box. :p

What side effects did you have?
I feel conflicted about whether to tell the doctor about the fact I eat Nicotine™ lozenges like Skittles. A month ago I had a visit for blood work. I thought the nicotine and caffeine might have been spiking my blood pressure so I cold turkeyed off both for 7 days before the visit. It was absolute hell. I was an emotional basket case. Irritable and snappy at people. Splitting headaches. But even so I was still 160/110 for that doctor visit. Today's visit (where I finally gave up denying it and asked for BP medication) was also about that level. I had consumed copious quantities of nicotine and caffeine today and it was the exact fucking same as a visit where I had gone a week without either.
I was honest about my past drinking at least. My liver enzymes are normal btw!!!!

Maybe try some exercise, some cardio exercises can lower BP. For instance, riding a bicycle at or below 10 MPH for 30-45 minutes can be effective in lowering BP.

I think it is. I feel kind of at a loss for how to handle it. It may be psychological but it's taking a toll on my heart and internal organs.
For anxiety meds they basically have SSRIs and benzodiazepines. I'm wary of benzos because they have a very similar pharmacology to alcohol (to the point where they are used to treat life-threatening alcohol withdrawal). Given my past history of alcohol abuse and addiction, I would like to avoid anything similar to alcohol.
SSRIs I'm wary of because I was on Prozac as a kid and I really hated it. The other reason is because I've been on Elavil (amitriptyline) for the past two months sleep and this is incompatible with SSRIs (risk of serotonin syndrome as they both elevate serotonin). I don't want to get off Elavil. I like Elavil. It makes me tired at night when I take it.

I had a strange sinking feeling in my chest every now and then, despite having normal BP during those occasions. Felt a little dizzy an hour after taking it (maybe 15% of the time). That was basically it!

Also, if you're ever given the option, I recommend Buspirone™ for anxiety. Essentially no side effects, and although it takes 3-4 weeks to begin working, it's pretty effective without the side effects of SSRIs (IME).

I understand. I used diazepam to get off the alcohol. I get it prescribed for my anxiety disorder but I hardly take it. I take zoloft/sertraline SSRI 150mg daily for anxiety as I've been on it for years, I'd rather come off it tbh.. Just a habit now.
Yes watch out for serotonin syndrome that's nasty & deadly.
The beta blocker is your best bet then. Buspirone won't more than likely be given as it's for short term anxiety in the UK.
You could also try a first generation antihistamine at night.. That will make you sleepy.
A very low dose of an antipsychotic may help anxiety and sleep but I heard that it has made people drop dead (rare) but still.. I stopped taking that.
There is one other option for you.. It's called pregablin it's non addictive and is used for many things, epilepsy mainly but given for anxiety sufferers too.. I was in it for a few years.

144/100, pulse 91bpm. It reduced it a little but not much. Last reading for tonight. I feel no side effects. I think the dosage is too low and I'll have to try increasing it, but not tonight.
I'm going to keep this thread active till I hit 120/80 with pulse 70bpm or lower.

Why don't you tell your doctors about your caffeine/nicotine use? It won't affect the care you get. Id understand for illicit substances (never said anything when i was using because three out of my five meds are controlled) or even alcohol.

Pretty okay. I ended up taking the other half of the extra pill (so took a double dose this evening) and now I'm at 121/81 pulse 69bpm. A bit tired but okay!
I was worried I wouldn't be able to get it under control with medication but I now I feel okay seeing I just needed a bit more to get it down.
Also I forgot to mention the beta blockers stop the chest tightness I get when I'm stressed. They also mute the physical symptoms of anxiety which helps me feel less anxious. It's actually quite a relief and I feel like a complete idiot for not getting these sooner.

Probably. Ironically my anxiety about my blood pressure makes it higher. I gave him logs from me measuring it at home. I think I'm not in any danger of hypotension anytime soon.
It was like 135/85 ish this past week. Some 140/90 borderline hypertension but no crazy 160/110+ like I was getting pre-medication.
