I've heard that it's been a tradition to name girls with family last names. So many girl's names aren't even particularly girly, but became that way through the tradition. Madison is an example, said to come from a joke in the movie Splash where the chick's name had to be made up on the spot, and the guy came up with Madison, which at the time would remind most people of Madison Avenue more than anything else.
