As a late-night snack, a light supper or even a quick snack, beans on toast make an ideal comforting meal when what you need is something warm in your stomach. Another excellent reason to love this simple, hearty dish is that it is very gentle on the wallet. Even after making this filling dish, you should have enough money left to afford a pint or two at the pub.
One of the big money savers comes from using a bag of dried beans; this also ensures that the beans have the right texture after several hours simmering away. Soaking the beans does mean you need to plan ahead, but between the room in your wallet and the final result you'll be glad you made the extra effort.
This yields a good amount of food, but personally, if I'm having beans for dinner I need a nice big helping. Even with a few big helpings for dinner you should still be able to have enough leftover to have a good fry up in the morning.
Although pork has not been a park of the British baked beans since rationing was in place during World War II, you can include a few slices of bacon to add some smokiness to the final product. But if you're used to the classic British bean, this version wont disappoint.
Brown sugar can be added to lots of bean/meat dishes to enhance the flavor. I personally am not a big fan of it, however I love to add cinnamon to beef/beef based entrees.

I had chili with cinnamon and nutmeg in it and I was like What?!

I've never used nutmeg in it before, but I love the flavor cinnamon gives to beef dishes.

OK so let's pin this down. are the dry beans merely boiled in water, or are there enhancements to make them not taste of nothing

I bet there's some veterans of the UK bean wars here, and some that have since passed, rest their souls.

There actually was a "baked beans price war" here in the 90s! Cans fell from 30p to 5p and eventually 3p where the price stayed for a while. IIRC, one local supermarket charged -2p per can — they gave you 2p to take a can of baked beans...
The Beans War and Battle of the Beans headlines were irritating as piss. Fuck, it's all coming back to me.

The Great Bean War of the 90's rivals the Falkland conflict. Just ask Syntax about it

right, when you buy them canned. but if you cook from dry beans, what ingredients are typically put in there to get the canned beans effect?

Water. Cooking dry beans without water probably does not work.
