The idea that humans can imbue themselves with animal characteristics through a kind of sympathetic magic by dressing up as different animals runs deep through the human psyche. We find evidence of this kind of thinking back into prehistory. Animals associated with speed, strength, fertility, knowledge, or other desired characteristics would be mimicked by early humans in rituals centered around war, birth, death, marriage, or sexual intercourse. Humans would adopt animal personas, or fursonas, of creatures whose traits they wanted to possess, and we see multiple examples from all over the world of early humans doing this.
While its origins are mysterious, it is commonly thought that Syntax originally proposed the idea to prehistoric humans around a camp fire one Tuesday evening in an effort to spice up an all-night dance competition. He was reportedly unaware at the time of the wide social and cultural echoes his idea would have on the chain of future events around the globe. Remnants of the original lobster suit he was planning to wear are rumored to exist in a funerary monument somewhere on the Eurasian Steppe, but archaeologists have never been able to pinpoint the location or get a straight answer from him about its whereabouts.
