@OP
What do you think caused this? To me it looked like a slam dunk case. The police said the evidence was solid, the mayor didn't want to dismiss it, the police didn't want to dismiss it.
Did something change where they thought they couldn't get a conviction (like something came up with the Nigerian Brothers credibility)?

I have no idea. I've heard that he made a sizable donation to the police department

He forfeited his $10,000 bail and some deal about community service.
He probably will complete that with teaching techniques in knots.

This is what the district attorney said and evidently all the cops are fucking pissed. Quote: We did not exonerate Mr. Smollett,” Simonton said. “The charges were dropped in return for Mr. Smollett’s agreement to do community service and forfeit his $10,000 bond to the City of Chicago. Without the completion of these terms, the charges would not have been dropped. This outcome was met under the same criteria that would occur for and is available to any defendant with similar circumstances.”
Simonton’s statement came after Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel denounced the Smollett decision as a “whitewash of justice” and Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said his department was blindsided by the move.
