I do recall a song about a boy named Tommy. It started with something like "TOMMY CAN YOU HEAR ME!?"

That would be pretty mysterious. Especially if he was suddenly all functional and able to recognize faces; perceive depth, distance, and texture from visual stimuli; parse and understand language; read emotion from expressions and tone; and do all those things everyone else's brain had to learn to do during the first few years of life. I would think someone who just had the ability to see and hear thrust upon them would react with confusion to all the new stimuli they didn't know how to interpret. Suddenly being all functional would be a weird thing indeed.
