Yeah, they do suck. VHS is a very finicky format.

yeah the quality is charming but kids today are just going to run their videos through vhs filters and upload it to youtube. or like record things on vhs, wear it out, then redigitize it, then upload it. that's the hipster comeback

I saw the end of a Teen Titans Go yesterday that looked like a spoof of 1980s kid-becomes-hero movies like Karate Kid, and I swear they put in fake VHS tape horizontal line streaking defects.

On the plus side you could watch like half a movie, stop it, and then when you played it again you could pick up at the exact moment you stopped watching. Even if you ejected the tape. Even if it was a year and a half later. With DVD you always had to mess around with the chapter selection and remember which scene you were on. Also you could fast forward through all the copyright/preview bullshit.

Reaching the physical end of the tape really drove home that you finished the movie. With DVD there's no end and no beginning. It's unsatisfying.

They were a lot less fragile than DVDs. In theory you can play a DVD a million times with no wear, but in practice the disks always get scratched and shitty. VHS tape is protected inside a cassette which you don't have to treat delicately.

Also I used to use a couple of VHS cassettes to raise my Nintendo 64 off the floor and get some airflow under it so it wouldn't overheat.

I have literally never had an N64 overheat on me. VHS isn't as durable as you think. A single small wrinkle in the tape, is enough to ruin an entire scene. Those small wrinkles can be caused by heat. Keep discs you do not want scratched in their case away from children, problem solved. As far as players go, VCRs require a lot more maintenance than DVD players do. Not only do you actually have to use them, in order to keep them in good shape, but you have to either have a head cleaner or manually clean the heads fairly regularly. Where as with a DVD player, you could leave it sitting for years, and at most have to lubricate the tray.

I love VHS, it has a lot of nostalgia for me, but DVD is a better format, and Blu-Ray is even better than that.

It hasn't been long enough. Give it another decade.

You can set some media players to behave like this. It's kind of fun starting something up and being thrust back into the middle of some scene you remember watching weeks or months ago.
