I enjoy the book, I have read it several times. I love that i have a horrible memory and the end is always fresh new and exciting to me. Will they escape Smaug's lair? Will any of them get the treasure they sought after? Good shit man.

One thing I found weird is how Smaug was discouraged when they cut the bridge to Laketown. He could fly. How was that an issue?
Another thing I found weird was how the elves noticed how much heavier the barrels were with the dwarves inside, yet Tolkien pretty much just wrote that off. Any thoughts on this or anything else?

I can't remember the barrel part, if i remember it was played off as something trivial, and in my opinion, Smaug was too embarrassed to pursue them, or perhaps he had limits imposed on where he could go?

Creates suspense. He writes that the elves noticed the weight, and makes the reader think that they dwarves may be discovered. They do it in movies all the time. Like when the bad guy hear the hiding woman drop a pen (or something) and he stops for a moment and listens before moving along and relieving the tension in the scene.
Very suspenseful stuff even in print.

As I mentioned (your barrel opinion needed no response IMO) I don't remember much about the end, but when people panic, especially in groups, they seem to do things that are OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE at the moment, but are useless in the long run.

OK, I guess you're right. It did make me wonder, but I think it was explained away a little too easily. What would have been more suspenseful is if they were about to open the barrels to check but something happens where they have to get rid of the barrels quickly.

Nope, that's one reason why I wanted to kick this off with these books. Also, it's debated whether LOTR is really a trilogy. There's an intro in my kindle version of LOTR that explains that Tolkien always considered it to be one book with 3 parts, though each part is often bound separately and the fact that the movie was done as a trilogy feeds this misconception.

If you want to watch it right now, they already made a movie for "The Hobbit" before, back in 1977, but it's animated. One reason it took them so long to make a new one is because they had to buy the movie rights from the people who made the animated one.
