256gb is more than enough. When it's 75% full, just buy another sd card.
Also say it's a youtube video - Choose the lower resolution download because no one needs anything higher when viewing results on a phone. Less resolution = less storage need.

Yes of course. Phones are free and the latest available - Point is Phones with ultra high-res 4K screens are serious overkill. Seriously
If super high-resolution screens are arguably unnecessary for a 43-inch TV, they're just about useless for your 5.5-inch phone.
Proof? Anyone can go to any AT&T store and compare brands of phones with various resolutions "side by side" with a movie from Direct TV

People said the same thing about 1080p, oh its stupid when we have 720p no need

Depends on what you're using it for but almost certainly yeah. I got a 128gb sd card and I expect that to be enough space for years.

Let's go back to Kooks question and why she asked. It comes from another topic about downloading Youtube videos to store and view later. Do you really believe the videos she wants to watch are produced in 4K LoL. Based on examples of Youtubes linked on MC, most appear to use almost toy grade video cameras. Do you think 4K on a 5 inch phone screen is necessary. No need to answer unless you are one of those people that enjoys adding cold hard cash to my wallet and if so thanks.

Normal phones don't have sd slots?

Samsung has Galaxy's with sd slots as well as 4K with 6.6 inch screen.
There is even a cool soon to be available device that plugs into the sd slot. Apple is still trying to make this beta device bluetooth compatible and it fails

Apple is a ''Normal Phone - No sd slot lol, nor are sales up to Apples expectations by any means - Many Android phones have sd slots.
Should Add - Apple just despises anything that helps Google Inc. Pisses Apple off. Apple Hates just Hates Google for Google Maps LoL
Apple Phones not doing well at all in sales and Apple is looking for other ways to stay Alive Alive ~ O

Apple solves this by forcing you to use their costly cloud. They want you to just send stuff to iCloud storage.

It really is all about the marketing. You have been around long enough to remember when Cadillac was considered the best brand to own. Not that it was because they were real beasts when driven fast. Rich people were never in a rush so no problem.
Apple as a design that is held in hands has always been the front leader and others like Samsung follow - That which feels good is a winner. Cost to own that which felt the best was Profitable. Then when Apple could no longer make them thinner and slicker at the same time and perform as the Best - And Apple has given up on being technically the best for the moment - Anyway over all in the past Apple WAS the Best and sources say they have given up as the leader because they have run out of people that want to buy.

Your parents are comfortable with their phone most likely - Betting your phone is less costly. So you could put your phone side by side with theirs and watch the same youtube video. A couple of videos for a few minutes. So many variables and nick pickers here will make algebra out of this. This is why I suggest to people a trip to a larger AT&T store where they are also trying to sell Direct TV along with phones. If video is of most importance then a side by side comparison really works wonders.
Best buy is great for TV comparisons - Often colours are mostly the same but when it comes to something as simple as BLACK - Many cheep TV's do not display Black as real Black - More a shade of Grey/Black.
Oh and only recently did Apple agree to change a battery for less than that OUTRAGEOUS $$ as in past but it's still costly

No. Not having any idea of the specs of your device - My point is and with limited time today. The very best video possible as say a modern HD Movie - Imax - On your miniscule teeny tiny screen, will have major limitations. You do not even expect the most expensive phone on the market to display a Imax video as expected.
That is why I suggest when you have nothing better to do. Just go to a local larger AT&T store and tell them you want to look at 3 phones side by side with top price range to cheapest with the SAME Screen size. See if you can see a significant difference. You will with the least expensive phone because the display itself is of less quality. (exceptions to even that)
But let me be more direct. I spend a fortune on Hi-Fi for home audio. Crazy how much over the years I have spent on just speakers. Yet for the Gym I use a SanDisk MP3 player with 256K sd card. I have it set to random with a choice of 7500 tunes. I do not have it set to download at Maximum Resolution. Nor are my headphones super expensive HiFi type - I chose a model that is lighter on my head and maximum comfort which the most expensive are NOT. So for me I have compromised for comfort.
Not having a clue how good our bad your phone is for video NOR will Specs answer the question Because it does come down to how you view your videos - Amount of ambient light in room - Amount of reflected glare off of walls - How often are your eyes directly Exactly in front of the phone and the distance you view.
Again this is like Algebra - How many variables - What is most important - Resolution your eyes may not even see as a difference. And remember one size does NOT fit all.
