Topic: I just took my Chromebook out of developer mode.

Catherine !ttGirlsPl2 started this discussion 7 years ago #84,734

Figured that I botched the installation of crouton and Ubuntu years ago when I did it since Ubuntu wasn't installing needed programs in tutorials.

If I ever wanted to install Ubuntu again then I would just look up a more modern tutorial.

Well, Ubuntu is probably a step above Chrome OS.

Just buy a fucking computer.

If you want to install Ubuntu you'd be better off with a regular laptop. The Chromebook was designed to prevent you installing other software so I think you'd be fighting an uphill battle.

Just get a cheap normal laptop. That way you can pop in an Ubuntu flash drive and install in like ten minutes and not have to go through weird shit like developer mode and Crouton.

Crouton isn't that difficult to install and neither is Ubuntu. Plus a part of me feels like this Chromebook should be reserved for general web browsing and school anyway. I just think that I selected the wrong type of Ubuntu and didn't look at the specs.

I have a desktop at home and this has been my laptop for some time. I only really needed one for Math homework anyway and I could do my programming and math classes on here since Chrome does have a terminal.

You said
> Figured that I botched the installation of crouton and Ubuntu years ago when I did it since Ubuntu wasn't installing needed programs in tutorials.

Then
> Crouton isn't that difficult to install and neither is Ubuntu.

Something does not add up.

I think I just messed up permissions because the tutorials that I was following told me to install this program "app store" like software to install programs, but for whatever reason, it didn't allow me to install from there and I forgot what the error message was. I could still install programs from the command line though. I think I botched a step. Setting up Crouton and install Ubuntu with it wasn't that hard though.

It's probably the router that's the problem. Happens all the time with the kind of functions you're talking about.
And with router malfunction things will only get worse.

Externally hosted imageOkay, what the fuck is this?

I did a search on my system for "terminal" and opened it for this popup to occur.

Why not uninstall and then do a fresh install. Keep track on paper of messages.

That's essentially what I did. Taking the Chromebook out of "developer mode" clears the local files and uninstalls crouton/ubuntu.

It'll work much better for that, that's exactly what Chromebooks were designed for.

You can install Ubuntu on them but that's just not what they're designed for.

I personally like Chromebooks a lot. It's kind of beautiful they made a computer just to run Chrome. I don't use Chrome anymore because I'm trying to de-Google myself but they are great and fantastic for anything web related.

Plus it seems like I could still use Linux software now (@972,969 (Catherine !ttGirlsPl2)).

I don't have anything against Chrome OS, to be honest and honestly, I think I might keep this in Chrome OS.

I still have access to a terminal and ssh for my assignments too.

The router is disallowing follow through of the upkeep function. Well disallowing is not exacting the proper term but the code is not going to intersperse if there is not enough parsecs in the follow through and what's causing that is your router is gimped up. I thought you got that shit straight?

Wtf is your guys' obsession with the router shit? It's done, it's over unless you're two of Syntax's UIDs.

I also forgot that in developer mode I was using an outdated version of the operating system since apparently Google made it so you can run Android apps on the device through Google Play which is definitely a nice luxury.

I honestly do not regret buying this years ago during Black Friday.

For sure Anon F is not Thee Thy or I - I only have a few seconds to check in for email and looked at MC and laffed re the 45 Fail

I am going to ask you how exactly sure that you have removed the Linux files just by switching out of developer mode. I use cromebooks many of them but not for net stuff - They are all dedicated to special projects and I do not see how just switching out of developer mode clears those installed filed but hey if it does er but hummmm Anyway good luck

And last comment cause people are driving up n I am going to check out a new Blues Band just up da street

That may be true but just like the Raspberry - Chromebooks can be jury rigged to do some amazing stuff real cheep and Chrome OS is so flexible - And I am fugging Linux into a more formal UNIX and sure a few wires and masking tape into the guts but hey when project is over I will just give them to some recycle operation that helps school project

I looked up how to uninstall crouton and ubuntu. They said that was just one way to do it and I think Chrome OS itself even informs the user that it clears the local data.

Chromebooks don't generally have a bunch of internal storage play with. Ubuntu desktops generally expect a computer with a realistic sized hard drive. There are ways to pare down linux distros to fit in really tiny places, but that's generally for things that are doing pretty specific tasks. I'm guessing even if you got Ubuntu up and running, you would just have a laptop with next to no storage space to install or keep anything you might want to use. There are surely ways around that with external storage devices and silly file system mounting schemes and some init scripting shenanigans, but it sounds like you wouldn't have fun tinkering with all the different clever hacks and work-arounds.

It might be better to keep it running as a Chromebook and get what functionality you can out of the machine's intended use. The kinds of people who install linux on everything they own are sick, twisted masochists who just like complicated bullshit for its own sake. They cackle with glee when they spend a month banging their heads against a problem and finally exert their will forcefully upon the machine by making it do things it was never designed to do. They mostly do it for a hollow sense of self-satisfaction and geeky bragging rights that they installed DSL on their shitty smart-toaster that they also reprogrammed to cook eggs by altering the device's cook time specifications that they then wrote a special protocol to edit via XML from on an app from their phone. Or whatever. The bottom line is that they are broken, hollow people, Cathy. You don't want to be like that. You're better than that.

It's okay if it's just a Chromebook.

Wtf? I wish this existed when I first tried this.

This guide looks very straight forward.
